| Aroma Coffee Festival @ Sydney, Australia |
[17 Jul 2009|12:57pm] |
Hey guys! Just wanted to give a heads up to anybody in Sydney this weekend. There's an Aroma Coffee Festival this Sunday at the Rocks from 10am to 5pm. Coffee for just $2! Plus cupcakes! Plenty of cupcakes... mmm..
Click for more info.
My friend and I are definitely going. Who can pass excellent coffee at just $2 a pop? I've never been to a coffee festival before, so I'm really excited! =D
Who else is going?

I'm having a hard time finding a voltage converter for US appliances to use in New Zealand. I already have a plug converter, I just can't seem to find a voltage converter. The one listed on the conair website is over $30 and I was hoping to find one for less. Can someone please point me in the right direction, online ordering only please.
Thank you so much.

It would appear that I am paying off my debt way faster than I originally planned. When I put this plan in motion a few months back I projected it would take about 15 months to get out of debt. If I continue the way I have been I will be done with debt in less than 12 months from the time I started. After I pay off my car I'm gonna set some money aside and have some fun for a few days and then it will be just a few short months and my student loans will be gone.

| Bitter end. |

A lot of anger. Mostly for myself, but for others as well. Sick of you being passive aggressive. Sick of YOU being a liar and a sorry excuse for a man. You are two seconds away from losing me forever and all you can do is complain about how you had to cancel 'shows actually worth booking.' None of the shows you book are worth the amount of money and effort you put into them. You are pretentious as hell, and I can't be with someone whose 'calling' is to book shitty bands that no one has ever heard of in a small town in the middle of fucking nowhere. I'm sick of crying over you and your shit. Get it together or I'm out.
So much anger.

¿Alguien me puede ayudar entender algunas palabras de este chiste?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CjHap7FQty4

Do you remember ever feeling as conflicted as you do now? How all you fucking wanted was for him to keep his word, to stop flip-flopping, to stop going back on the things he said before. How you wondered what happened to, 'getting focused and applying to art school and moving when my lease is up.' How you were so upset because he kept making excuses to keep him in the middle of fucking nowhere, far away from you. How he kept saying he loved you, but kept making excuses. Things that make you feel worthless, even when they're not meant to. Confused because there are people here who fawn over you, friends who tell you that you deserve better, but how you felt like no one came close to comparing. How you argued for over an hour about existential bullshit, impossible moves to NY, and how you said something awful and hung up without saying goodbye. How guilty you felt when you tried to call back and apologize, but he didn't pick up. How you wondered why the only time you've ever felt anything remotely close to the first time you fell in love, why it had to be with someone so fucking far away. How you were sad, because all of your friends were sick of hearing you whine about how he made you upset again. How they got sick of you talking about how upset you are because he's not here, and you're starting to doubt he ever will be. How you wish you hadn't made the mistake of telling him you weren't going to leave him, even though it's been on your mind for days. How you should probably just end this before your heart breaks even more. How hard you cried at the bus station when you had to leave. How you cried in your seat for a solid 20 minutes. How you say you never cry, but you sure have been doing a lot of it lately.
How you wish he would have just fucking called today. Because he said he would. Wondering if this shit will ever end.

oh wow, extreme ups and downs. i am a major perfectionist, to the point where i don't present anything less than good, the instructor says she is too, that "in 42 years i haven't found anything i am perfect at. have you?"
and i said "i usually have a good comeback." fozzie bear laugh. right? book smart, reading smart, but my dexterity has to catch up. i am really not good at not doing things exactly right the first time. i am working on it. i have eleven months of imperfection, until i am licensed. i am making new friends, reinstating old, clarifying, etc etc.
lisa invited me to a party tonight in a warehouse, 23rd and way the fuck out. pleasantly surprised by the music (dirty mittens, who sound like love is all), crowd (eugene). see facebook for the jem with the mullet and unicorn tattoo. 30+, not in the know. facebook.com/missameliahart
also, haven't run into hardly anyone, um. what's up with that? i am going to attempt to leave my house more, really, maybe cross the river on my own. pdx pop now and the zine symposium soon (NEXT WEEKEND), so that is a +.
oh. hi. where are you?

In America, we have CB codes for easier communication over the radio, like alpha, delta, bravo, hotel, whiskey tango, etc. Can someone show me the Spanish version? I keep getting these stupid calls where I tell them "seis" and they say "three?"

| Avtovo, Saint Petersburg |
[17 Jul 2009|04:42pm] |
I hope this question is not too out of place in this community. I am studying in St. Petersburg in the fall and have found a possible host family who lives in the Avtovo suburb of the city. I've been told the commute from there is about 35 or 40 minutes to the center. Is this true?
I will be studying at the Philological Dept of Saint Petersburg State University (located at on Ul. Leitenanta Shmidta I believe). How far is the commute to there from Avtovo?
In general, does anyone have any opinions about living in Avtovo? Or, as always, if anyone knows of a potential host family for me in St. Petersburg, I am interested in that as well. Thanks very much.

| Russian vocabulary is dying |
[17 Jul 2009|02:13pm] |
At the beginning of the 20th century dictionaries of Russian and English languages contained approximately same amount of words: 200 thousand. In the 1930s English dictionaries had already 600 thousand, while Russian contracted to 88 thousand…
The Russian vocabulary of the 19th century had 153 words with the root LUB (love); now there are only 41 such words. “Love” has shrunk by three fourths...
This data has been collected by philosopher and linguist Mikhail Epstein.

Hello again!
I have been planning to study Arabic in Damascus for quite some time, and I am currently a few months away from the fruition of my plans (Just building up enough money to go). One thing I have been sorely lacking in, however, has been the actual dialect. There is http://www.syrianarabic.com/ but I havent heard enough about it to feel comfortable spending the money on it yet. Anyone have any websites or other idea for how I can pick some of it up? Free is best, but I will pay if I must!
Also, any recommendations for texts to supplement the Al Kitaab books and a Hans-Wehr dictionary would be welcome :D

My lye came in the mail today, I thought it would be more but this is fine. The bottles had lye or some white powdered that appeared to be lye on the outside which is kind of scary. I wiped them down with a vinegar soaked rag.

Hola :)
My boyfriend is sick with a pretty nasty sinus infection, and we ended up in the ER to get him some antibiotics this past weekend. On our way out, I saw two signs, one in English, one in Spanish, listing off the services the hospital provided and what things would automatically qualify you for those services. I read signs in Spanish a lot, usually without reading the English counterpart, to see what I understand and to learn new phrases and uses of verbs and so on.
Anyways, I saw the phrase "dando la luz" on the Spanish sign, then headed out the door. While we checked out, I thought about the phrase. I realized it was probably the present progressive form of "dar" (so "giving"), but that combined with "la luz" (which I know is "light") confused me, given the context. I've never heard of or seen that phrase before. I ended up going back and reading the English sign and drew the conclusion that "dando la luz" is "being in labor".
I was wondering if anybody could confirm this? Did I draw the right conclusion? And I'm very curious to know why "dar" and "la luz" are used like this? I was really suprised that "dando la vida" wasn't used instead. Or even "dando el niño". I'd be interested so see how this originated and if there are other phrases that are widely accepted for "being in labor", also.
Gracias!

I posted an essay about the "Mysterious Russian Soul" a few months ago. My humble little essay was accepted for publication in a minor collection of essays in the Russian language at my university. I am supposed to edit it and submit it for final publication sometime soon, so I was hoping you could look it over and inform me of any mistakes. Thanks very much in advance.
